Welcome!

WELCOME to the Small Book Blog! I am a voracious reader. I love losing myself in books and cannot wait to read myself into my next adventure. It is because of this love for books that I created this blog. I want to share my passion of books with you! I hope you enjoy my recommendations and reviews. My goal is that they will lead you to a new book, series or author, that you can fall in love with and recommend to others as well.

Reveal it!

I thought I would post to see what everyone is reading! Reveal it, share it (please)! If you just finished a book how was it? Looking for a book this weekend? Any recommendations?

I am reading Laura Griffin’s novel Thread of Fear. So far, so good. This was a book loan from my mother in law.  I just finished the audio book of The Night Circus. I am still simmering on what I really think of it. It had highs and it had parts I am not sure about and overall I am on the fence.

  1. I'm actually working on three books right now, although I consider one more of a reference type book that you don't necessarily read from front to back.

Book 1 - fiction - Classifed as Murder, A Cat in the Stacks Mystery by Miranda James. I haven't gotten very far, but am finding it entertaining. There's been no murder yet, but I figure there's one coming! I would recommend it for light reading.

Book 2 - non-fiction - Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone by Eric Klinenberg. I read about this book from somewhere. I often read books I've read about in the Wall Street Journal or Entertainment Weekly, and sometimes from other magazines I subscribe to (sorry, can't remember where this one came from!). I also enjoy finding new authors through recommendations from friends and co-workers. I'm enjoying this book so far. I rarely read non-fiction, and tend to find it a bit of a struggle, but this one actually has some very interesting statistics in it.

Book 3 - iPhone 4S all-in-one for Dummies. I got an iPhone 4S for Christmas from my parents, and about all I knew how to do with it for the longest time was make a phone call. A co-worker starting clueing me in on some of the neat stuff I can do with my new toy, so I decided to get a book from the library to learn even more!

If you are looking for an excellent read this weekend, I'd recommend The Mermaid Singing by Val McDermid. I discovered her some months ago and quickly tore my way through a vast majority of the books she has written (she is a very prolific author!). A BBC show was developed from one of her series of books (protagonists Tony Hill and Carol Jordan) called Wire in the Blood. I am now working my way through all 6 seasons of the DVDs from my local library! If you've read some of her books already or decide to try one of her books, I'd love to hear your take on her.

  2. tpagrl, thanks for the reveal! I love it! I just (this week actually) bought the iPhone 4. Good idea on the idiot guide book, those are very helpful. I was debating on taking the class my cell provided offers but instead have been pestering my friends with the iPhones.

I looked up your book recommendation of The Singing Mermaids. I have never heard of the book series, author or the BBC series. I love the various BBC series (did you watch Downton Abbey? So good.) and will have to see if I can get this one on my Netflix eventually. I looked up the novel on Goodreads and it looks interesting. I added it to my to-read list. Thank you!

I can’t wait to hear more reveals from you in the future! Happy Friday and Happy Reading!

  3. I have not heard of Downtown Abbey. Thanks for the recommendation. And just as info, Wire in the Blood is definitely available on Netflix (that's what you'll find it under if you go searching). I watched a few episodes when I was visiting my parents in NC (they have Netflix, I don't).
